Antigua is a colonial city located in central Guatemala. (It is also an island in the carribean, but that's another project.)
Antigua was the capital of Guatemala until an earthquake in 1717 destroyed almost 3000 buildings, leading to the founding of Guatemala City.
The city of Antigua is surrounded by 3 volcanoes. The largest volcano is Pacaya, which is still active. It last erupted in May 2010, which rained ash over Antigua and all the way to Guatemala City.
While volcano eruptions are rare, Antigua is a fantastic example of a preserved colonial city (it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.)
